Largo do Paço and Paço Imperial

Largo do Paço, now known as Praça XV de Novembro, was the center of administrative and commercial power in colonial Brazil, housing the Paço dos Governadores, later called Paço Imperial. The Paço Imperial, built between 1738 and 1743, became the seat of the Portuguese government in Brazil. In 1808 it became the headquarters of the entire Portuguese empire, when the Portuguese royal family moved to Brazil. Rio became the capital of an empire that included Angola and Mozambique in Africa, Goa in India, Timor in Southeast Asia, and Macau in China.
